Legendary Indian painter M F Hussain bid adieu to the canvas today. It will no longer spring to life again nor get to bear his strokes and colors. The painter passed away today at London. He was 96.

Husain was associated with modern art ever since the 1940s. Husain was one of the highest paid painters in India. His single canvases have fetched up to $2 million at a recent auction. He was also knows as a film makers and his first film was ‘Through the Eyes of a Painter’ that fetched him the Golden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival in 1967. He was enamored by ethereal beauties as Madhuri Dixit and the result was another film ‘Gajagamini’. He also made another film with Tabu titled ‘Meenaxi; The Tale of Three Cities’.

There was a whole lot of controversy over a few of his paintings which were interpreted as anti-Hindu. What followed were several legal cases and death threats after which, he was on a self imposed exile from 2006. In January, 2010, he was offered the citizenship of Qatar, which he accepted.

An autobiographical film on M F Hussain called ‘The Making of a Painter’ is under production. Shreyas Thalpade plays M F Hussain in the film. The apinter – filmmaker would be dearly missed!
