Focal Point – Blue Valentine (2010)

Blue Valentine is a 2010 English romantic drama film that was written and directed by Derek Cianfrance. The film premiered in competition at the 26th Sundance Film Festival. It was written by Cianfrance and Cami Delavigne and Joey Curtis, and stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling.

The film follows a married couple, Dean Pereira (Gosling) and Cynthia “Cindy” Heller (Williams), and the times they are together and their eventual falling apart. The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

Blue Valentine has received much critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes reports that 87% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 175 reviews, with an average score of 7.7/10. The user rating is slightly less at RT, and falls at 75%.

As for the awards and accolades, the film won Derek Cianfrance the award for the Most Promising Filmmaker at the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards. It also won Ryan Gosling the Best Actor Award at the Chlotrudis Awards.  Blue Valentine that had the tagline ‘Nobody Baby But You And Me’, was rated NC-17 for a scene of explicit sexual content by the MPAA.
