Tulpan is a 2008 Kazakh drama film that has been directed by Sergey Dvortsevoy. Tulpan was Kazakhstan’s 2009 Academy Awards official submission to Foreign Language Film category. Though it did not win an Oscar, it did win the award for Best Film at the 2nd Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

The film tells the story of Asa, who lives in a barren wasteland along with his family that consists of his sister, her husband and three children. He wishes to have a herd of his own, but is told that he needs to have a family of his own, if he has to own a herd. Asa decides to marry Tuplan, the only woman available for marriage within hundreds of miles around.

The film holds an awesome 95% Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Though it was appreciated by film lovers in Kazakhstan, it was also criticized by a group of viewers who felt that it put the country under bad light.
