Joshi’s Sevenes & the Smoking Ban in Action!

Submitted by on September 11, 2011 – 10:48 amNo Comment |

We were watching Joshiy’s new film ‘Sevenes’ the other day, and something very interesting caught our eye! There is one particular scene in the film that has the seven youngsters engaged in a conversation and all on a sudden a warning line appears at the bottom of the screen that shouts ‘Cigarette Smoking is Injurious to Health’.

Our immediate reaction was to scourge all over the screen, since none of the seven youngsters were shown smoking. And it is then, that Maniyanpillai Raju, who plays a shady character by the name of Habeeb in the film, caught our eye. He remains mostly out of focus on the scene, somewhere far behind, and its only when you look real hard that you get to see him. And voila! He is smoking as well!

Strange indeed! We are in no way supporting smoking nor are we undermining the influence that scenes as these could have on young viewers. But this scene in particular and the warning note, was definitely funny in that it attracts attention towards the smoker, rather than create an awareness about the hazards of smoking!

Ironically, the film itself is about a group of young men who get swerved into leading a life spattered with blood and violence. Going by the nature of the warning messages, there should be one through the entirety of the film, proclaiming that ‘goondaism is not a heroic activity’ lest young minds get beguiled by its spell.  There is another scene in the same film, when a man is slashed in all glory, and there is no warning message flashing out there!! Warning for Cigarettes, and Silence for Cold blooded Murder. Funny, huh?
