Reports have been streaming in that a sequel to ‘Umrao Jaan’ is being planned, and that none other than Rekha herself has been approached to do a key role in the film. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the actress might consider being a part of the film.

Muzaffar Ali himself would be directing the sequel and this would be his third film. Javed Siddiqui who has been asked to pen the script is busy on it, and the film would have the director working with the script writer again after almost three decades!

‘Umrao Jaan’ was based on the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada (1905), written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa based on the famous Lucknow courtesan. The film starred Rekha and Farooq Shaikh as leads and was released in 1981. The soundtrack was composed by Khayyam and the lyrics were penned by Shahryar. Several songs from the film, sung by Asha Bhosle, are considered classics of filmi music: “Dil cheez kya hai”, “Justuju Jiski Thi”, “In ankhon ki masti”, and “Yeh kya jagah hai doston”.
